Senate Passes Fence Bill

Take Action!
Call President Bush and Urge Him Not to Sign this Bill.

Please Ask the White House to Push for Comprehensive Immigration Reform

On Friday, September 29, the U.S. Senate passed the "Secure Fence Act of 2006.” This bill authorizes 700 miles of new border fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border. The bill was originally introduced in the House of Representatives as a piece of their enforcement-only approach. The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) believes that enforcement of current laws alone will not solve our immigration problems. First we must enact comprehensive reforms to create a well-functioning, enforceable system.

For years, President Bush has supported a comprehensive approach to immigration reform. Yet now he is considering signing an enforcement-only bill into law with no comprehensive immigration reform on the horizon.

Call President Bush today! White House phone number: (202) 456-1414.

Tell him:* Thank you for supporting comprehensive immigration reform.* Do not sign the "Secure Fence Act of 2006."* This bill is not a solution to our immigration problems and symbolizes the enforcement-only approach of the House of Representatives.* Continue to push Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform because immigration reform can only be effective if it is comprehensive.* Comprehensive immigration reform includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, creates new legal channels for future immigrants, reduces family immigration backlogs, contains smart enforcement, and protects the civil rights and civil liberties of everyone.
